THE DOORS TO THE INN swung open and Fia and the girls paraded in. Oaklyn looked lovely in red, her skirts falling all the way to the floor, concealing her injured leg. Narine, in her azure dress, glanced over her bare shoulder giggling, as the serving attendant winked and Tyri scolded that same boy when he ogled at her lithe figure in a sultry teal dress.

The cool breeze had chilled Fia’s bare skin. She was acutely aware of her cleavage, her exposed leg and the tight silhouette of her body. They walked the carpeted floor until they came to the table, where the men sat. Wild fire erupted, seeing Erebus outfitted in a suit and tie. His curly locks were tied back, accentuating the smooth planes of his face, and he smiled in that way he did. She smiled too. She would find herself content to look at him all night, ignoring everyone else, but she tore her eyes away when she sensed the Aratah's heavy gaze.

The Aratah was handsome, she couldn’t deny that, looking like midnight suited up in obsidian. Hair slicked back and face freshly shaven. He oozed power and brilliance in the line of his posture, the air of his presence. He took Fia’s hand and leaned down, placing a gentle kiss there, and she hated how significant she felt. Not significant to the room, but significant to him. She’d spent so many years being ignored, her very existence challenged, but he had a way of making her feel seen, even if it was all kinds of messed up. She couldn’t deny the part of her that basked in his recognition. That someone this important would value not only her company, but her opinions, her ideals. He validated a part of her that had lain dormant for so long and the very thought that she could influence his intentions was significant indeed.

The Aratah appraised her appearance with a crooked smile and Erebus shifted out the corner of her eye. “You look absolutely stunning, Fia.” For a split second she wished she’d chosen the black gown. But she straightened her spine and pushed back her shoulders and encouraged herself with bold introspection. He glanced around the room at Narine, Oaklyn, Tyri and an unfamiliar lady dressed in pink chiffon. He didn’t greet them with a kiss. “You all look delightful. I must send my thanks to Delia. Please,” he said, extending a hand. “Sit.”

With a cool leathered hand at her back, the Aratah ushered Fia to her seat. He took the seat to her right. The lady in pink sat across from him, Harken across from Fia, and Oaklyn sat to her left. Taking their seats, the sect shot suspicious glances at each other, particularly Tyri, who was at the end next to Narine. The doors to the dining room opened and a white-haired man, with scars disfiguring his right cheek, entered. He stood tall for his average height and every head in the room bowed. She wondered who it was.
